Shop-a-holic In Training

The kids' school is running a Christmas Candy Cane Shop fundraiser. You send your kid to school with $10 and they return with the cheapest plastic toys ever made (usually somewhere in China) for their brothers and sisters and the sort of perfume that comes in a gallon jug and stings when you put it on just for mom and either a #1 Dad keychain or mug for... well, dad. Sounds like fun, right?

Zoe sure thought so. She reminded us no less than a dozen times last night. "Remember, we need real money to go to the Christmas shop. REAL money. Dollar bills. Or a check."

Uh-huh.

This morning, twenty minutes before the alarm went off, she threw open our bedroom door, "Did you remember about the Christmas shop? Did you put REAL money in the envelope?"

Yes, Zoe.

Five minutes later: "Are you getting up yet?"

Five minutes after that, "Can I buy something for mybestfriendJordan?" It's never just "Jordan." It's always mybestfriendJordan - all one word.

We'll see, Zoe.

Michael groaned when the door opened again and turned the alarm off for good as Zoe asked yet again, "Is it time to go to school yet?"

In a minute, Zoe.

"She's awfully excited about this shopping thing," I sighed.

"She's a girl." Michael reminded me. "Isn't it in the genes?"

I shrugged. "I'm not that bad...am I?"

He snorted. "Shall I remind you of the $1400 vaccum cleaner?"

"Well, at least it's only $10."

"Yeah... this year... what about when she's sixteen?"

"Good point."

I think we're in trouble.

Operation Decoration

I forgot how much drama and work it is to put up a real Christmas tree - quite a balancing act!

But the decorating is finally DONE. We had two ornament casualties during the process, and the cat has tried to climb the tree once already. The dog, on the other hand, keeps mistaking the Christmas tree stand for a toilet bowl and drinking the water.

Can I take a nap until Christmas now?

A-Hunting We Will Go

We spent yesterday tromping around in the snow, looking for the perfect Christmas tree. A friend of Michael's from work lives with pigs and chickens and goats and cows... the whole farm deal. They also have a bunch of evergreens that the prior owners planted to start a Christmas tree farm. Many of them are getting too tall to even sell.

They offered to have us come out and cut our own tree. So we bundled up and went out to find the perfect tree. The three kiddos ran around in between the rows (Michael's friend from work has a four year old daughter) until we found just what we were looking for.

Daddy cut down the tree - but Dmitri insisted on "helping."

Timber!

Then we dragged it off to strap it to the top of the car.

Dmitri insisted on "helping" again.

They have a new puppy - the kids loved the puppy!

And their new calves were fun to visit, too... although as Zoe said, "Cows are stinky!"

Who me? Stinky?

Moo!

I guess I can't put it off any longer... gonna have to drag out all the Christmas decorations this weekend and put up the tree... Wish me luck!

Man Vs Mild

Anybody out there watch this show?

Michael's hooked on it. Well, as much as he can get hooked on anything that involves the television. This guy, with the unlikely name of Bear Grylls, formerly in the British Special Air Services, gets airlifted into the wild with very few tools - let's say, a flint and a water bottle - and he's filmed "surviving" in these inhospitable environments with no outside assistance.

Supposedly.

He's been all over, from the Florida Everglades to Iceland to the Ecuadorean jungle. He does a dramatic voiceover on every show about how to find water, make fire, and acquire food under all sorts of conditions.

Guys love him because he's like the McGyver of the Wild. Women everywhere apparently go crazy for this guy - they think he's all sorts of sexy, with that British accent and all those "he could rescue me" vibes.

Frankly, I wouldn't put my mouth anywhere near the man.

Just tonight, he was out in the arctic (or somewhere, anyway, with lots of ice and snow - I was trying not to pay a lot of attention) and he exclaimed: "This is such an inhospitable environment, nothing grows or lives here, so there's really nothing you can find to eat."
I cheered his impending starvation. "Thank GOD!"

I've been subjected to this man eating everything from spiders to beetles to raw goat testicles. I've had to see him drink out of "fresh" water pools with loads (literally) of animal dung in it ("Tastes like drinking out of a loo bowl," he says, and then leans in for more!) He's smeared himself with animal feces while laying animal traps and has pissed a circle around his "kill." (And proudly informed the ladies that it only works for men - we don't have enough testosterone in our urine, apparently. Dude, if I was in a situation where I had to pee in a circle around my food, it'd be time for me to go meet my maker, k?)

Of course, then he found the ONE insect that lives there. (How long did they scout for THAT sucker, I wonder?) Thankfully, it's so rare it's a protected species, and he decided to spare its life and not eat it. So I didn't have to watch legs wriggling around outside his lips and hear his description of how "squishy and awful" it tasted.

Bored with the television, I decided to surf the 'net and came across this article. Apparently, Mr. Macho Survival Guy spent a few nights in a motel instead of out on the tundra where he led viewers believe he was shivering in his tent all night. Oh reallllly!? *perk* Mr. "I've endured snow and ice, wind and sun"... Uh huh. After a warm night in bed and a bit of the telly, eh?

And men say we women like to watch dramas? Ha!

New Job

Michael told his employer yesterday that he's taking a new job. It's officially official, so now I can blog about it. Woot!

Strangely, we moved out here in order for him to be closer to work. He has about a six mile drive at this point. The new job is twenty miles from here - but that's still nowhere near the fifty miles he was driving before we moved.

But because the money is much better, and the benefits are, too, and the opportunity just sort of fell into his lap, it was just too hard to turn it down. Plus the stress level where he's working now is getting to be too much. The cap on his groups is twelve, but they're putting 18-20 people in there, which nearly doubles his paperwork.

Paperwork is the worst part of his job.

I hate change... but I'm hoping this is going to be a good one. I don't see any drawbacks to it yet, aside from the longer drive, and that's very do-able. He may have to work some evenings, but they're very flexible. He could even work four days a week instead of five, if he wanted to.

He's really leaving his current employer in the lurch. They've had a huge turnover there, and Michael is one of their best therapists. I know they're going to miss him and regret losing him. His supervisor said, "I'll see if management wants to meet the offer." We'll see. I doubt they will.

I know Michael will miss the people, and even the clients. Working with addicts has been really rewarding for him, and he's exceptionally good at it. The new job won't be inpatient treatment - he'll be seeing outpatient clients, dealing with substance abuse, yes, but a lot of other issues as well.

As much as I hate change, I can't see the negative to this. Let's hope that holds out. *crossing fingers* It really does seem too good to be true. And we all know what they say about things that are too good to be true...

I'm just gonna tell my inner cynic to take a freaking vacation and enjoy the ride, okay? Okay, then. Here we go...
