Pumpkin Carving

Four big pumpkins this year (we love lots and lots of seeds to roast!)

Daddy always opens the pumpkins.

Time for carving, yet?

Nope, first we have to get all the "gunky" out.

And there's lots of "gunky!"

Then we get to make our faces.

Taking turns with the "safety knife."

Halloween Fun

The local hardware store had a free little Halloween thing, so we took the kids. Since their school forbids both masks and any "violent" costumes or weapons, neither of them will be able to wear their full costumes. *sigh*

Batgirl and Wolverine might as well get some use out of them before trick or treating!

 

Even if Wolverine is missing a tooth...

They had fun in the bounce house.

And playing in the fire truck. 

Dmitri tried on the fireman's coat. It was a little big. :)

They entered the coloring contest.

 

 

Even Blake colored something. 

Plus there was face painting. 

Both of them got a bat. 

 

 

And then we went home full of punch and cookies. 

Zoe said, "Today was a fun day!" 
 

Playing Catchup

Funny how when my Internet access disappears for three days, the house suddenly becomes spotless. :x

Shhhhhh!

I'm hoping my husband doesn't make the association.

*crossing fingers*

So let's play catch-up...


1. We picked the kids up from school on Halloween (instead of waiting for them to come home on the bus) to discover that Miss Zoe got a "bus ticket." What's that!? I asked the principal. Apparently, she was "suspended" from the bus for a day because she can't stay in her seat. Kindergarteners unable to stay seated!? Really!? I'm so shocked! It's a forty minute ride, folks. Which I pointed out to the principal. Anyway, she asked us, "What day would you like to pick her up from school?" Michael, thinking fast, said, "How about today?" Ha! So she's back on the bus again. Why don't busses have seatbelts, anyway? Isn't it rather dangerous for them not to, when you think about it??

2. Yesterday was the kids' dental appointment. (Perfect day, right after Halloween, right?) New dentist, since we just moved. No cavities, just a lecture about thumbsucking for both of them. School is actually helping in that department (I was hoping it would!)

3. Today is Blake's fourteenth birthday. Happy Birthday, Blake! He's with his dad and we won't see him until next weekend, but I'll call him tonight. I can't believe it's been fourteen years since he was a little baby...

4. I'm participating in NaBloPoMo or whatever it's called. (Look over in the sidebar --->) It's short for National Blog Posting Month. Which means I'm posting every day in November.

Let's hope my Internet access holds out!

1. Healthy Stuff: Boxes of Raisins, Pencils, Toothpaste, Toothbrushes (I'm sorry, but it's Halloween... that means candy!)

2. Spider Rings, Plastic Toys, or Loose Change (again, nice try, but no)

3. Most Hard Candy, especially Dum-Dums and Jawbreakers (i.e. Fireballs) Halloween candy should be chewy, and preferably contain chocolate.

4. Peanut butter kisses – the stuff wrapped in orange and black paper

5. Black Licorice

6. Circus peanuts

7. Bit O'Honey

8. Popcorn balls

9. Necco Wafers

10. Wax Teeth, Lips, Bottles, etc.

11. Red and White Pinwheel Peppermints

12. Good N Plenty

13. Rocks

Note: 90% of parents admit they steal candy out of their children’s Halloween bags.
10% are lying.

Almost Halloween

Have I mentioned this is my favorite time of year? Cool, crisp fall weather, the changing colors of the leaves, cider and donuts, apple picking, pumpkin carving (and pumpkin seeds! yummy!) hay rides, haunted houses and, of course, Halloween.


Which happens to be my favorite holiday. Why?


Well, first of all, I don't have to buy presents. Not that I begrudge giving gifts or anything, but everything is so commercial nowadays I get tired of the "Buy Buy Buy!" mentality that seems to run it all. For pete's sake, kids are even getting loads of gifts on EASTER now. When I was a kid, the Easter bunny left a basket with some candy and hid eggs. That was it. He didn't bring me a Wii and an Ipod. (Okay, so those didn't exist when I was a kid, but you know what I mean...) So I like the fact that, so far, there's no mythological "Halloween Bat" creature who goes around leaving X-Boxes for kids on All Hallows Night.


Second... I love the candy. I have the biggest sweet tooth in the known world, and if I indulged it as much as I wanted, I would have to join the circus or undergo gastric bypass. Seriously. It's that bad.


Halloween gives me an excuse to not only buy candy (because, of course, we have to have stuff to give out on Halloween!) but to eat candy. Leftover candy (and no, I'm not one of those moms who buys the gross stuff like Smarties or those awful black and orange wrapped chewy things so I won't eat it, either) and of course, candy stolen from my children's pillowcases.


Yes, I admit it. I'm a candy thief. I love the guy who started putting razor blades in candy. Or at least, I love the guy who started the rumor about the guy... I do! That means I get to "check" their candy and make sure it's safe before they eat it. Gee, honey, let me see that Snickers, I think there might be - CHOMP - nope, that one's fine, here's the rest...


Third, I love scary movies and Halloween is a perfect excuse to watch them.


Fourth, I love pumpkin carving. Okay, so I hate cutting out the top of the pumpkin, and scooping out pumpkin guts, and sorting pumpkin seeds, and actually deciding what to carve and then carving it and then cleaning up the pumpkin mess. I hate that part. But I love the end result!

And the pumpkin seeds.

And the kids won't love it like this forever.

Even the big ones!
